MILESTONES
& EVENTS
The last few months
have been a very exciting and busy time for the project with several major
announcements and achievements.
- The completion of
clearing and drainage in KR Section during December brings the total
to 80% of project requirements.
- Earthworks have been
completed on Stuart Highway overpasses south of Adelaide River and south
of Tennant Creek. See

- Production of sleepers
exceeded 50% of project requirements at the Tennant Creek Sleeper Plant.
- Tracklaying by the
Northern Tracklaying crew (operating out of Katherine) exceeded 50%
complete.
- The final beams were installed
on the Elizabeth River Bridge (the largest on the project) in December.
This major bridge is now structurally complete along with those at Adelaide
River, Cullen River, Fergusson River, Edith River and Katherine River.

- ADrail completed the
rehabilitation of the Gouldian Finch wet season feeding habitat with
the assistance of Greening Australia and Aboriginal workers from the
Kybrook Aboriginal Community.
- On 5 December 02, the NT Government
announced it would spend $9 Million on a Business Park in the East Arm
Development Area to complement the East Arm wharf precinct and the railway.

- Katherine has the potential to
play a major role in the Territory's import and export networks and
a workshop to evaluate Katherine as a road and rail hub was held on

- On 13 December 02, the section
of track between Katherine and Tennant Creek was completed with a ceremony
taking place to commemorate the final thermit weld on this section.

- On 16 December 02, the NT Government
announced the location of passenger terminals in the NT. See links to

CONSTRUCTION
HIGHLIGHTS
The Construction
Progress Map has been updated recently to give an overall picture
of where ADrail are progressing. Previously some viewers were having difficulty
accessing the map with Acrobat. There are now several options to view
and print the map, but if you are still having difficulty, please
let us know.
A few highlights since our last eNews
are:
Darwin
- The structural works on the Elizabeth River Bridge were completed
in December.
- Work on mud removal and replacement at Berrimah Yard has recommenced.
- Latest employment figures show 313 Darwin residents are directly employed
on the construction of the railway.
Katherine
- The latest employment figures show 242 Katherine residents are directly
employed on the construction of the railway.
- 310km of track is now complete to the south of the town and 28 kms
to the north. Tracklaying south from Katherine was completed with the
joining of the track between Katherine and Tennant Creek on 13 December.
- Earthworks and drainage
in the KR section north of Katherine were completed during December.
- Tracklaying north
will recommence from Katherine towards Darwin in April.
- Approximately 982,000
tonnes of ballast (82%) have been produced at the Witte Quarry and the
production of sleepers reached 563,000 of the total 883,000 required.
Tennant Creek
- Latest employment figures
show 138 Tennant Creek residents are directly employed on the construction
of the railway.
- Tracklaying north from Tennant Creek was completed with the welding
of the track between Katherine and Tennant Creek on 13 December.
- 363km of track is now complete to the north of the town and 28 kms
south.
- 1,210,000 tonnes of
ballast (77%) has been produced locally.
- The 8 November issue of Tennant & District Times featured an interesting
article, by Paul Milton Butler, on the sleeper factory in Tennant Creek.

Alice Springs
- Over 97,000 tonnes
of rail has so far been delivered to the Roe Creek Logistic Centre by
rail from OneSteel Whyalla SA to be trucked north to Tennant Creek and
Katherine depots.
- Earthworks and Rock
Crews have relocated to the ASR section to continue clearing and blasting
works, with 3 camps operating to accommodate workers in the section.
- The latest employment
figures show 54 Alice Springs residents are directly employed on the
project.
South Australia
- $60 million Contract awarded to EDI Rail. More Information
- At present 121 South
Australians are directly employed on the construction of the railway.
- South Australia industry
has so far been awarded contracts valued at over $329 million.
