The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority administers the 1989 Sacred
Sites Act, the aim of which is the protection and prevention of desecration
of sacred sites in the Northern Territory. Sacred sites are defined under
the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 as "a site that is sacred
to Aboriginals or is otherwise of significant to Aboriginals according
to Aboriginal tradition". The AAPA must provide certification for
any activity which affects sacred sites and has pegged all sites to be
protected along the railway corridor, in consultation with Aboriginal
communities.
